General Information

Civil Service provides quality services to both internal and external customers by supervising and implementing fair and impartial employment, promotion, discipline, and discharge for classified service employees.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

  • Typically, positions are advertised and recruitments conducted only when a need exists to update or establish an eligible register.
  • All positions have minimum qualifications; applicants must meet or exceed minimum qualifications to be considered for employment in that position.
  • Positions can be advertised within the City to classified service employees and/or to the public.
  • Job announcements are posted for all recruitments and contain information such as: salary, recruitment period, summary of job duties, minimum qualifications, examination information, and any other conditions that must be met. Applications are required and must be submitted by the application deadline.
  • Job information is posted in newspaper advertisements, on the Internet, and in the office.

APPLICATION REVIEW

  • Job announcements specify minimum experience and/or education requirements, but oftentimes the number of applicants far exceeds the number of vacancies. Announcements sometimes state that only the best qualified applicants will be considered. This means that applications are screened and only applicants having knowledge, skills, and abilities most closely matching the department's needs are invited to the examination. This screening of qualifications is extremely important, so do the best you can to document your experience thoroughly.
  • All applicants are notified by electronic or conventional mail, regarding the status of their application.

TESTING

  • Examinations are tailored to the job and can take many forms: written, structured interview, training and experience evaluation, physical ability, etc. Some examination processes involve more than one test; however, there are times when only an interview is required. Regardless of the test format used, each component is scored and the test focuses on skills required on the job.

CERTIFICATION

If you have successfully completed an examination process and have been placed on an eligible register, please contact us if:

  • You change your address and/or phone number.
  • You are no longer interested in employment and want your name removed from consideration.

If you decline an interview or an offer of a position, your name will be removed from the employment list. If you are contacted for an interview and you do not respond, your name may be removed from the register.

Several steps in the employment procedures process are required before an employee begins work. They may include:
