UWF BEST House: Energy Efficient, Environmentally Friendly, Sustainable Technologies for NW Florida Housing

Pensacola, Fla. - The world’s need for energy efficiencies continues to grow as people search for sustainable, low-impact and “greener” lifestyles. Energy Services of Pensacola (ESP), working to develop and sustain a cleaner, healthier environment through the use of clean-burning and efficient natural gas, is collaborating with the University of West Florida (UWF) and others to sponsor a model-home project that will demonstrate a real-world example of modern residential efficiency and sustainability. The project’s goal is stimulating a dialogue on sustainable, durable, and affording housing applications for Northwest Florida.
The BEST (Build. Educate. Sustain. Technology) House will focus attention in a number of areas including:
- Energy Efficiency – Increasing comfort levels while significantly reducing monthly costs for heating, cooling, and water heating.
- Storm Mitigation – Utilizing techniques and materials to construct a home able to withstand extreme windstorm conditions.
- Sustainable technologies – Committed to green practices, the BEST House will include proven and promising new technologies that focus on sustainable, renewable resources while minimizing the environmental impact.
The BEST House brings together the resources not only of ESP Natural Gas but of manufacturers, builders, subcontractors, designers, and engineers to produce a prototype of a technologically advance, energy efficient, and environmentally sustainable house. Upon completion, expected by fall 2008, the BEST House will remain open to the public on the UWF campus while undergoing periodic renovations in subsequent years to continue reflecting the most advanced technologies, materials, and construction methods.
Don Suarez, Director of ESP says, “We at ESP see our participation in the BEST House as an opportunity to display the clean and efficient qualities of natural gas. Part of our mission is to provide sustainable and affordable energy in a world requiring greater technology, smaller carbon footprints, and heightened awareness of environmental impacts. The BEST House project, bringing together a multitude of construction and design criteria to achieve the greatest impact, is a perfect demonstration of why clean, efficient natural gas will continue to be a primary answer to our nation’s energy needs, now and in the future.”
As a dedicated, real-life, hands-on demonstration home, the BEST House will serve as a locus for discussions of higher-efficiency, affordable, and sustainable housing in Northwest Florida while providing educational and promotional opportunities for participants, including UWF students and faculty as well as related trade-school programs from throughout the community.
As a proud sponsor of the BEST House ESP will provide natural gas installation to the project while assisting with the installation and demonstration of natural gas appliances, including:
- Humidity Control Desiccant System
- Tankless water heater
- Cook top
- Exterior lighting
- Whole house generator
- Outdoor kitchen
- Outdoor fireplace
