Is a Business Tax Receipt Required?

A Business Tax Receipt is required before engaging in any business in the City of Pensacola, including home-based businesses. A receipt is required for each place of business and for each separate classification at the same location. Section VII of the City of Pensacola Code of Ordinances provides complete details.

Own a Home-Based Business?

All home-based businesses need local zoning approval. Apply for a Home Occupation Permit with the City of Pensacola Planning and Zoning Department at 850-435-1670.

Do I need a Street Vehicle permit?

Yes, a Business Tax Receipt is required if the nature of the business takes owners or employees inside the city limits to conduct business, even though the business establishment is in the county.

Where can I Obtain a Business Tax Receipt Application?

Please contact the Business Tax Collector at (850) 436-5693 for an application which can be emailed or faxed. You may visit our friendly office to apply at Pensacola City Hall, 222 West Main Street on the 5th floor Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:30pm.

How do I obtain a Business Tax Receipt?

A Business Tax Reciept can be obtained upon approval of application and payment in full. Once payment is received, the local business tax receipt will be mailed in approximately one week. If applying at City Hall the Business Tax Reciept will be issued to applicant.

Cost/Renewal

The cost for a Business Tax Receipt varies according to the type of business, profession, and/or the location it must be renewed annually. Receipts expire on September 30th of each year.

What Is the Penalty for Failure to Pay the Business Tax?

The penalty is up to 25% of the business tax due, in addition to any other penalty provided by law or ordinance, for any person who engages in any business within the City without first obtaining a Business Tax Receipt.

Can I Transfer my Business Tax Receipt (BTR) to a New Location and/or to a New Owner?

Yes. The Business Owner/Applicant is responsible for notifying the City (850) 436-5693 of any changes in the business address, business owner mailing address, and any changes of the business or corporation name. Any receipt may be transferred from one location to another within the City. A business tax receipt may be transferred to a new owner when there is a bona fide sale of the business, upon payment of a transfer fee of 10% of the annual tax, not to exceed $25.
