About the Sanitation Department

Residential Garbage

Garbage collection is mandatory within the City of Pensacola. About 19,000 customers use the service via wheeled containers provided at no cost to the user. An automated collection system makes one-weekly collections. This activity also designs and implements programs that comply with the Solid Waste Management Act.

Central Garage

This activity maintains all City vehicles and most of its equipment (750 units). It also coordinates with City departments to develop specifications for vehicle and equipment needs and is ultimately responsible for reassignment and disposition of used city vehicles and equipment through public auction. The Garage operation supports all other city departments through wrecker service and field maintenance.  The Central Garage can be contacted at (850) 435-1895.

Thank you for helping us to make your home, neighborhood and city a cleaner and better place to live. If we can be of service or provide any information, please give Sanitation Services a call at (850) 435-1890.

Code Enforcement

The division consists of both sworn law enforcement and civilian personnel. Code Enforcement is responsible for the enforcement of all Florida State Statutes and Municipal Ordinances that deal with code related violations, the monitoring of all franchised haulers that operate within the City of Pensacola and the cutting and cleaning of non-complaint overgrown vacant properties within the City of Pensacola. Code Enforcement continues to be proactive in the creation and participation in programs designed to improve the neighborhoods within the City of Pensacola.

Code Enforcement divides the City of Pensacola into four separate BEAT areas (North, East, Central, West) with each BEAT having an assigned officer. This is done so that an officer can become very familiar with their own BEAT area and for the citizens of a particular BEAT area to become very familiar with their own BEAT officer. This has been successful and Code Enforcement officers speak and meet regularly with individual citizens and neighborhood organizations within their BEAT in an effort to assist them with any code related concerns they may have. Code Enforcement staff has played a key role in the creation of many pro-active programs designed to address code related issues within the City of Pensacola such the as the Sanitation Services S.T.E.P. program, The Code Enforcement Gateway Watch program and the Code Enforcement Community Code Enforcement program.

If a citizen has a concern or question about any code related issue, they can simply contact Code Enforcement during regular business hours and the complaint will be investigated that same day. If the complaint can not be handled by Code Enforcement staff directly, Code Enforcement staff will insure that it is forwarded to the proper agency for handling. You may contact Code Enforcement by telephone at (850) 436-5500, by fax at (850) 595-1470 or by e-mail using the contacts listed under the staff contact icon. Our office hours are Monday thru Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. YOU MAY REMAIN ANONYMOUS.

Transfer Station

This activity carries waste to the disposal site via trailers, thus eliminating the need for all sanitation vehicles to travel to the disposal site. This reduces wear and tear on the vehicles, maximizes productivity for units in the field, and minimizes traffic at the landfill.

Trash Collection

This activity collects yard debris weekly and helps with programs to reduce the volume of materials, as called for by the Solid Waste Management Act.

Don Smith, Sr. Administrative Officer II (850) 435-1890 dsmith@ci.pensacola.fl.us.
